2020 Pétillant Naturel – Sparkling Mondeuse

100 percent “Mondeuse” from the certified organic Tres Hermana’s vineyard on Foxen Canyon Road, Santa Barbara County.  Destemmed and pressed after 24 hours.  Fermented in a tank on the native yeasts and hand bottled before the completion of its primary fermentation. Unfiltered, and unfined with a coudy appearance, due to the yeast and sediment left in the bottle.  No sulfur added.  Rosé in color and style.

A little about Mondeuse, taken from the “interwebs”:

Mondeuse is a red wine grape variety primarily grown in the Savoie region of France. It is known for producing full-bodied wines with good tannins and high acidity, making it well-suited for aging. It is an uncommon variety, with only a small amount of Mondeuse wine produced each year.

A Disclaimer on Tres Hermana’s as the vineyard has it labeled as “Refosco”. Again… from the internet:

Mondeuse and Refosco are different grape varieties. Refosco is a red wine grape primarily grown in Italy and is used to make bold, tannic wines. Mondeuse is a grape variety primarily grown in the Savoie region of France and is known for producing full-bodied wines with good tannins and high acidity.

For some time it was also thought that Mondeuse Noire and Refosco were the same variety. This seems to stem from some old vines of the former, grown in the University of California’s Jackson experimental vineyard in Amador County, California being incorrectly labelled as the latter.

We believe this is what happened at Tres Hermana’s.

What ever this grape is… it’s delicious. Drink chilled and with friends.  It’s a little muddy, take care in opening.  It will get a little mousey with time but usually you finish the bottle before that happens.
