Description
2025 Lo-Fi Trousseau – Clos Mullet Vineyard, Santa Barbara County
Our sixth vintage of Trousseau from Clos Mullet Vineyard in Los Alamos!
Originally from the Jura region of eastern France, Trousseau is a relatively obscure red grape with a surprisingly long history in California. Known for its delicate color, bright acidity, and lively red fruit, Trousseau produces wines that are wonderfully aromatic, savory, and refreshing. A lighter style of red with plenty of character and personality.
Our Trousseau has a particularly interesting history. The vines at Clos Mullet were grafted from cuttings provided by our friend and fellow winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, whose material traces back to Jackson Vineyard in Sonoma County, where Trousseau was planted in the late 1800s. It’s a little piece of California’s pre-Prohibition wine history, now growing in the sandy, shale-influenced soils of Los Alamos.
For the 2025 vintage, the grapes were hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and fermented in a large stainless steel tank with daily pump-overs. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in a combination of a 1,200-liter Austrian Stockinger oak foudre and a 600-liter neutral French oak demi-muid. These larger, seasoned oak vessels allow the wine to develop without overpowering the delicate character of the grape.
Made with our usual minimalist, low-intervention approach, this is our California interpretation of a classic Jura variety, with a distinctly Los Alamos personality.
Six vintages in, and we’re still in love with this grape.
